Letter to Little Man

Posted by Jen on December 18, 2008 in Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of..., Mommyhood |

I decided to start a tradition this year. It’s one that I think I’ll wish I’d started about 5 years ago.

Every year, I’m going to make time around the holidays to write a letter to each of my family members letting them know what I love best about them and what having them in my life for the past year has meant to me.

Little Man gets to go first this year. This is partly because for much of the year, he’s had to give the “go first” spot to his baby sister. It’s also partly because he’s so dang loveable that this letter is easy. I could have written so much more!

Hey Bug-A-Do,

This year has gone really fast (ummm, like a fighter jet makin’ smoke) and I wanted to write you a short note to tell you how much I love you.

I’ve really enjoyed watching you grow this past year. You have gotten so big and grown up that sometimes I really miss my little boy. Most of the time, though, I’m too busy to miss that little guy because I’m so busy being proud of the little man you have become.

As I’ve been thinking about writing this to you, I’ve been trying to figure out what I love most about you.

You are so busy and alive … and interested in everything. I love the way you look for bugs while you and Daddy are working in the backyard. I love the way that you always make sure that BK and I are safe from the mowers and the tools and the noise. I love that you always bring me a flower or two. But, that’s not what I love most about you.

I love the way you explain things. You have an detailed explanation for everything and each one is very interesting to listen to. You’ve taught me a lot about how the blades in your tummy work to digest your food, about how black widow spiders and scorpions are dangerous, and much more. But, that’s not what I love most about you.

I love that you want to snuggle with me and have Mommy and LIttle Man time – just the two of us. I’ve watched you play as your trucks and trains tackled big, heavy work. We’ve listened to music and shared your favorite videos. But, that’s not what I love most about you.

I love that you NEVER stop talking. NEVER. (Sigh … Sometimes I wish you would take a breath, but I know that one day I’ll miss your constant chatter very much.) The things you say make me smile. Your words help me see what your brain is doing and that’s very cool. Mommies with quiet kids don’t always get to see that. But, that’s not what I love most about you.

I love that you want to be just like your Daddy and your Grandpa. They are two very cool guys who can teach you a lot (and you are a fantastic student). You made good choices there. But, that’s not what I love most about you.

I love that you are always very happy to see your Daddy and I at the end of a busy day. I love that you want to laugh and play with us. I love that you feel safe with us. I love that it’s so obvious that you love us. But, even that is not what I love most about you.

I can hear you say, “Mom, would you just tell me … and, then, can I have a sucker?”

OK … here it is. Ready?

I love that for the past year, you have learned about, anticipated, welcomed, protected, played with, and dearly loved your baby sister. You have learned what babies do and how they need to be cared for. You have proudly introduced her to anyone who will listen.

I love that you are proud of her. Proud that she is your sister. I love that you have not complained about having to share our time or about the many changes you had to make as she became part of our family.

Little Man, I love you for being a one-of-a-kind loving, caring soul down to your toes (which are usually full of sand from you makin’ smoke in the sandbox.). I think that’s what I love best about you.

You are a great joy to your Daddy and I and we couldn’t love you more.

Merry Christmas, Little Man.

                                                                      I love you so much,

                                                                      Mommy
