If you aren’t familiar with the show Man vs. Wild, you need to click here and take a look. (Although I think this post will make sense even if you don’t.)

We had our own little version of a nature showdown this morning!

Little Man woke up at 6:15 or so and told everyone who would listen that he was cold. When it was obvious that everyone was getting up, he and his Grandpa decided it was time to get out his Yamaha ATV and take it for a spin (this is battery-powered so danger and neighbor noise are not really a problem – both good things when it’s that early in the morning).

Grammy left his jammies on as long johns (longies) and got him as bundled up as you can get someone who doesn’t live where there is winter. Then, outside he went.

About 10 minutes later, I found him in the garage. He’d taken a couple of spins around the driveway and he and Grandpa were discussing cleaning up the leaves in the yard so he could extend his trek. That’s when it happened.

I asked him if he was cold. He looked cold. He acted cold. He insisted he was not. He was not going to come inside. It was clearly a lie. My son lied to me. (Oh, please … how dramatic … believe me it’s not the first time.)

I took one look at him and realized that nature was winning this one and he was stubborn enough to NOT give in. He REALLY wanted to be outside on that ATV.

I did what all mothers would do at this point (which is why Bear’s mother is NOT invited to the Man vs. Wild tapings, I’d guess). I asked if WalMart was 24-7 here and then announced that I would be leaving immediately get my kid some warmer clothes.

As you are taking all of this in, please keep in mind that this is me and it’s still only about 6:45ish at the time of this announcement. Oh, yeh, and it’s freakin’ cold outside!

Nature didn’t win this one in the end. Little Man got some proper longies, a pair of gloves, a pretty heavy sweatshirt, and a hat. He stayed outside ALL day raking leaves, tending fires, riding the Yamaha, and putting up outside Christmas lights.

He’s now tucked warmly in his bed and is sound asleep.

Tomorrow morning at around 6:30, I expect to hear him wake up his Grandpa. They have a lot of work to do and the ATV is ready to go again! Now that he’s got his warm clothes, he can go head-to-head with nature. Not exactly the same as Man vs Wild, but that’s OK because he’s still my boy!
